History of the Cambodian Women's Association

In 1983, when there were a significant number of Khmer immigrants arriving in San Jose area, a group of 5 Cambodian women formed a Cambodian Women's group in order to promote Cambodian culture and art. For example, traditional dance performances and fashion shows were offered during the Khmer New Year or at other festivals. Then a new Cambodian Women Association led by Ms. Victoria Lim and Ms. Vanandas Kylin was formed. They helped Cambodian immigrants to learn about American culture and the civic system. They provided translation, interpreting and other direct services such as transportation for the elderly and after-school programs for children. This women's group held classes on topics requested by immigrant families so that they could learn how to perform the tasks required by their newly adopted country.

Mrs. Channary Bill, the current president, joined the group in 2000 and formed the CWA Board of Directors in October 2002. She led the group to file for California Incorporation Non-Profit status, resulting in the Santa Clara County Cambodian Women's Association being identified in the category of an Educational and Charity organization. The IRS letter of approval for 501(c)(3) tax exemption was issued on May 14, 2003. She has been adding a variety of workshops and classes to help educate the community in fulfilling their duty as responsible citizens.
